Splash was my first foal and that first experience is always very special. As a weanling I led that little thing all over the farm, through the woods and over and around obstacles. If she is nothing else, she's the best leading horse you'll ever find!
My vet knew how excited I was to have this little foal that she made me a copy of the ultrasound picture. Below, Splash at 17 days in utero - she's the black dot!
Splash is picture here with a young riding student at Girl Scout horse camp. An extremely soft trot made her a very popular mount with the riding students.
About four years ago, Splash suffered a kick to the hock that required surgery. Although the hock healed well, the additional pressure on the opposite leg caused a serious bout of mechanical laminitis. Four vets told me to put her down but I just couldn't do it. I kept trying different things to try and save her. When I had almost lost hope and was considering putting her down, our farrier asked to try something different with her. With the help of our farrier and a friend, who is a retired vet, a year of treatment and confinement in the indoor arena, she was saved. She can be ridden lightly in the soft ground of the arena but she no longer serves as a school or trail horse.
Splash has had one foal, Tio Slate Heritage, still on the farm.
